Reckoning with Our Past: Building a Brighter, More Equitable Future
Thoughts from last night’s conversation

Last night, I attended a community event hosted by Bank of America and The Smithsonian Institution titled “Reckoning with Our Racial Past: Conversations for Our Shared Future.” It was an inspiring experience, featuring community leaders discussing the lasting impact of racial history.
The evening started with an impressive performance by the Young Men of Vision, part of the Gentlemen of Vision program. Their energy brought the audience to a well-deserved standing ovation. (You can watch the story of Gentlemen of Vision at https://www.pbs.org/video/gentlemen-of-vision-uxsnh8/)
Moderator Soledad O’Brien, a well-known journalist, led the panel through a discussion that dealt with race, equality, and systemic racism. The panel included: – Melanie Adams, Director of the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum, Karishma Furtado, a researcher at the Urban Institute, Michael McMillan, President of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, and Susan Stith, Interim CEO of Concordance. The event was enlightening and inspiring, with each panelist offering valuable perspectives.
Summary: The Cycle of Progress and Regression
Systemic challenges like racism, inequality, and structural oppression continue to hinder progress, often undermining strides toward equity. National tragedies have sparked widespread calls for change, yet deeper issues such as unequal pay, discriminatory practices, and lack of accountability persist. Performative gestures by corporations and governments frequently fail to address root causes.
In St. Louis, meaningful change requires addressing systemic disparities through:
- Open Conversations: Honest dialogues about racism and inequality foster empathy and understanding.
- Policy Reforms: Transforming laws and practices in policing, housing, education, and healthcare to dismantle systemic barriers.
- Economic Investment: Supporting marginalized communities through business opportunities, healthcare access, and education.
- Accountability: Ensuring institutions deliver on promises, treating equity as essential rather than symbolic.
I believe the message from the event is that lasting change occurs when individuals, communities, and institutions reject the status quo and actively challenge injustice. In St. Louis and beyond, the call for action demands unity and a shared commitment to equity, justice, and hope to ensure progress becomes a sustained legacy rather than a fleeting Moment.
