Community in Action: Webster Groves Presbyterian Church Volunteers Support SITO’s Revitalization Efforts
This past Saturday, nine dedicated members of Webster Groves Presbyterian Church (WGPC) volunteered their time and talents to make a meaningful impact at one of SITO’s properties at 4050 Delmar. Their efforts were part of WGPC’s annual Mission Weekend, where 114 members mobilized to complete 14 different service projects—offering their time, donations, and labor to improve the lives of others across the community.
The day began with the group visiting SITO’s newest addition at 4578 Evans Avenue, where they got a first-hand look at two apartments slated for rehabilitation later this year. Inspired by SITO’s ongoing work to revitalize affordable housing, the volunteers headed toward 4050 Delmar, ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work.
At 4050 Delmar, the team started by scraping and repainting the front door, then they began painting the entryways of two apartments that had already been fully rehabbed earlier in the year. In addition to their painting efforts, the group took on the much-needed task of cleaning out an apartment unit recently used for storage. Their diligent work helped prepare the building for its next major project: the rehabilitation of 12 more units.
The volunteers did not stop at just physical labor. After completing their tasks, they hosted a community barbecue for the tenants of both the Delmar property and another SITO property on Evans Avenue. The cookout fostered a sense of connection and camaraderie, creating a space where volunteers and tenants could share a meal and bond over the day’s accomplishments.
The volunteer work that the members of WBPC gave to SITO was just one of the many ways they were able to make a generous impact during their Mission Weekend. From donating supplies to lending a helping hand wherever needed, the 14 projects they undertook focused on making life better for others. This commitment to community support reflects the heart of WGPC’s mission and values.
SITO is grateful for WGPC’s generosity, which not only enhanced the spaces that will be provided for affordable housing, but also helped foster a greater sense of community. Their efforts gave a powerful reminder of the difference we can make when we come together to serve others.
It’s Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace
October 10th marked World Mental Health Day, a global initiative focused on promoting awareness of mental health issues and rallying support for mental well-being. This year’s theme, “Prioritizing Mental Health in the Workplace,” is particularly relevant in today’s world where the boundaries between professional and personal life have become increasingly blurred. JP’s Office Manager, Gigi Ralliegh, emphasized the significance of self-care, underscoring the importance of maintaining both mental and physical health to achieve our best selves. She also had this to say,
Mental health is one of the most important aspects of overall health because it impacts how we think, feel, and act. It’s crucial to regularly check in with yourself to ensure you’re doing okay. Take care of yourself as much as you take care of others. Make sure to allocate time for self-care and avoid overextending yourself. It’s not acceptable to let yourself decline to just 10% and think it’s okay because you’re still functioning. It’s never okay to give 90% to the world and keep only 10% for yourself. If you need a mental health day, take some time off and focus on regrouping, refreshing, and recharging. Prioritize taking care of yourself and recognize when you need to take a break. Pause the world for a moment and focus on yourself; trust me, the world will keep moving without you. – Gigi Ralliegh
Mental well-being is an integral component of overall health, with workplaces playing a pivotal role in its support. By prioritizing mental health, organizations not only nurture their employees but also enhance productivity, morale, and retention. This is especially critical for small businesses where resources may be limited, making it challenging to expand the workforce.
Making mental health a priority is crucial not just from an ethical standpoint but also a smart business practice. When the employees feel supported they are more engaged, creative, and productive. Moreover, workplaces that prioritize their employees’ mental health experience lower absenteeism, reduced turnover rates and increased overall job satisfaction.
As we contemplate World Mental Health Day, it is important to recognize that prioritizing mental health in the workplace is an ongoing commitment requiring sustained effort, attention, and proactive measures. This year’s theme serves as a reminder that fostering a supportive work environment benefits both employees and organizations alike.
Let us endeavor to make mental health a daily priority. Want to know more? Go to World Mental Health Day 2024 to find out how you can make an impact for yourself and others.
