Jeff Mendenhall’s Story Is Proof That One Opportunity Can Change Everything
When people talk about second chances, they often focus on what someone has overcome. At Justine PETERSEN, we like to focus on what someone is capable of becoming.
When Jeff Mendenhall first connected with Justine PETERSEN, he had every reason to believe the odds were stacked against him. After years of homelessness and rebuilding his life following incarceration, he had very little to his name. His first business plan wasn’t created on a computer or in an office. It was written on the back of a hotplate instruction manual while he was living in a motel.
Many people would have looked at Jeff’s past and stopped there.
We didn’t.
Business Counselor Noah Lynn took the time to get to know Jeff, not just his circumstances. He listened to his vision, understood his determination, and saw someone who needed an opportunity. Noah and the Justine PETERSEN team looked beyond the credit history, the setbacks, and the labels that so often follow someone trying to rebuild their life.
They saw potential.
That belief made all the difference.
With the help of a business starter loan and credit-building support, Jeff began putting the pieces of his life back together. He rebuilt his credit, purchased his first vehicle, and just fourteen months after leaving jail, became a homeowner. After years of uncertainty, he was finally able to create a stable home for himself and his children.
For Jeff, that wasn’t just about owning a house.
It meant being able to be a father again. It meant having a place where his family could grow, heal, and build new memories together. It meant proving that your past doesn’t have to define your future.
As Jeff’s life changed, so did his vision.
Drawing on both his professional experience in quality assurance and everything he had lived through personally, he began by asking a simple question.
What if we could help people before they reached a crisis?

That idea became Human Standability and CORA, a platform designed to help organizations recognize the early signs of instability and work together before someone loses their housing, employment, or financial security.
Jeff has taken that vision far beyond where his journey began. He has shared his work with members of the United States Congress, inspired conversations across the country, and continues exploring ways to help communities strengthen support systems before people fall through the cracks.
Looking at Jeff today, it would be easy to focus on the recognition or the innovation.
But none of it would have happened without someone willing to believe in him first.
That is what Justine PETERSEN does every single day.
We know people are more than a credit score, a mistake, or a difficult chapter in their lives. We know that when someone is given the right support, the right guidance, and someone who believes in them, incredible things can happen.

Beyond Exoneration: The Journey Continues
Today, Friday, July 17, 2026, community members, advocates, and local leaders came together for an important conversation about what happens after exoneration. While a wrongful conviction may come to an end, the work of rebuilding a life is only beginning.
One of the most powerful voices of the evening was Obie Anthony, whose personal journey served as a reminder that freedom is about much more than walking out of prison. After losing years of his life to a wrongful conviction, Obie has transformed his experience into a lifelong commitment to helping others who face the same unimaginable reality.
Throughout his journey, Obie has encountered individuals who challenged him to keep moving forward, to use his voice, and to turn hardship into purpose. Today, he continues that mission by advocating for those who have been exonerated, helping connect them with the resources, support systems, and opportunities they need to rebuild their lives. From housing and employment to financial stability and community support, his work recognizes that true justice extends far beyond a courtroom.
The discussion reinforced an important message: exoneration is not the finish line. Many exonerees return home with significant barriers that make it difficult to reintegrate into society. Access to financial education, employment opportunities, stable housing, and supportive community partnerships can make the difference between simply surviving and truly thriving.
Justine PETERSEN was honored to be part of this meaningful conversation and to stand alongside organizations and community leaders committed to creating pathways toward long-term stability and opportunity. Together, we recognize that rebuilding lives requires collaboration, compassion, and a shared commitment to ensuring that those who have been wrongfully convicted have every opportunity to succeed.
