A Justine PETERSEN Success Story
Toni Crockett didn’t just open a shop; she built a destination. Located in Alton, Illinois, inside the historic Milton Schoolhouse, The Whispering Roots breathes life into a space that is deeply personal: Toni’s father’s former second-grade classroom. Between the “haunted” local lore and the layers of family history, the shop has a character that can’t be manufactured.

A Curated Vision
The Whispering Roots is an intentional blend of the old and the new. Toni has filled the space with a mix of vintage treasures, upcycled furniture, and new finds that feel timeless. It’s a place designed for slowing down—where a customer might come in for a statement piece but leave with a hand-poured soy candle and a bit of inspiration for their own home.
The shop is the culmination of years of passion. During her time in Minnesota, Toni found herself drawn to the art of upcycling, learning how to see the “new possibilities” in forgotten furniture. Today, she balances a career in real estate with the creative demands of the boutique, even pouring her own candles (the Bourbon Butterscotch has already earned a loyal following).
Growing Pains and Partnerships
The community response has been so strong that Toni is already facing the best kind of problem: she’s running out of room. The demand for her restored pieces is quickly outgrowing the historic classroom walls.
While Toni was used to referring her real estate clients to Justine PETERSEN to help them navigate the homebuying process, she eventually realized that her own business could benefit from that same support. Moving away from funding everything out-of-pocket, she reached out to the team to secure a small business loan.
For Toni, the process wasn’t just about the capital; it was about the people. She credits the “amazing” and “perfect” support from the staff for making the financial side of entrepreneurship feel approachable rather than intimidating.
Rooted in Purpose
Today, The Whispering Roots stands as a testament to what happens when you honor your history while leaping into the future. Toni and Robert haven’t just built a successful business; they’ve created a space that people can feel the moment they walk through the door.
