Small Business Spotlight

Noticed Arts Expo with Yolanda Nelson

As I entered the Noticed Arts Expo, I observed a hustle of excited people walking briskly into the venue. I was greeted by attendees to the event and one of the hosts, Johnnie, who treated me like a very anticipated guest!

I became quickly intrigued by the many tables showing all types of art, from oil paintings to clothing to jewelry and so much more. One young lady and her mom had a table with bracelets. I asked the young lady what had made her want to get started as an entrepreneur. She stated simply that she was bored and wanted something to do. In fact, she was a making a bracelet the whole time she continued her conversation with me. It was a joy to see a future millionaire in the making!

There were also other vendors providing drinks and food. One vendor was selling “Jigga Juice,” which was very delicious! In addition, there were multiple areas for entertainment. One of the live entertainers that stuck out to me was a poet named Innergy, who provided the audience with several poems. The last poem, titled “Words,” really resonated with me. The man with the cowboy hat, Mr. Thymes, was M.C. and kept the crowd engaged.

There were so many beautiful people of all ages, sizes, and nationalities. A few of them were wearing an array of colors, just like me.  I guess we had similar thoughts when attending an art event: You can also be the art! I had a wonderful time, and will definitely be attending again next year. The JP Team is so honored to be able to make Johnnie and Graciously Noticed’s dreams come true, as we do, one business at a time.

Advocating for Missouri: A Visit to Capitol Hill and the 2025 Just Economy Conference

This week, Will Jordan and I (Andrew Barnes) had the privilege of joining fellow advocates in Washington, D.C., to meet with representatives from our state and champion the issues that matter most to our communities. From the offices of Representative Emanuel Cleaver to Representative Ann Wagner and Wesley Bell, we made our case, ensuring that the voices of those we serve were heard at the highest levels.

Our discussions centered on critical issues, including housing and the role of Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) in expanding economic opportunity. We highlighted the impact that organizations like Justine PETERSEN and other Missouri nonprofits have in creating pathways to homeownership, financial stability, and small business growth. The ask is always great—on both sides—but the conversations were productive, and it was inspiring to stand alongside so many dedicated advocates fighting for a better future.

In addition to our meetings on the Hill, we had the opportunity to attend Just Economy 2025, where leaders from across the country gathered to exchange ideas on advocacy, policy, and community development. The conference opened with a powerful speech from a Representative who set the tone for the event, emphasizing the importance of equitable financial systems and the role we all play in shaping them. It was inspiring to learn from organizations across the nation—and even the world—who are leading the charge in advancing economic justice and financial inclusion.

Beyond the policy discussions, the experience of being in the nation’s capital was a powerful reminder of the importance of civic engagement. Seeing the passion and commitment of Missouri’s nonprofit sector reinforced why we do this work: to create real change for individuals and families in need. While there is always more to be done, this visit reaffirmed that progress happens when people come together, speak up, and push for meaningful action.

It was a pleasure to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones. It was inspiring to engage with like-minded individuals who, despite having different opinions, still strive to work together towards a common goal.
