2024 Housing Matters: Strengthening Communities in Illinois and Beyond
The 2024 Housing Matters conference, hosted by Housing Action Illinois, took place in Bloomington, IL. The event brought together advocates, experts, and community leaders from across the state and beyond. It focused on strengthening communities, ending homelessness, and addressing housing challenges, highlighting innovative solutions and collaborative efforts to improve housing stability and affordability throughout Illinois.
The conference was filled with insightful workshops and keynote presentations that addressed a wide range of housing issues. Attendees had the opportunity to learn from experts on topics such as affordable housing development, tenant protections, and community revitalization strategies. The workshops provided valuable tools, techniques, and best practices to apply in our communities, emphasizing creating equitable and sustainable housing opportunities.
In addition to the informative sessions, the keynote speeches by David Berenbaum, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Office of Housing Counseling, US Department of Housing and Urban Development, the roundtable discussion with Mboka Mwilambwe, the Mayor of Bloomington, Julie Moore Wolfe, the Mayor of Decatur, and Councilmember Bobby Burns, were particularly impactful. Leaders from diverse sectors shared their experiences, offering new perspectives on housing challenges and opportunities in urban and rural areas. What resonated the most was the call for action and collaboration to make lives better for everyone.
The social reception, accompanied by appetizers and live music performed by The Reginald Lewis Quartet, provided a perfect atmosphere for networking and conversation. Throughout the evening, I had the chance to meet a diverse group of individuals representing various organizations, each with their unique perspectives on housing issues. From local housing advocates to state policymakers, these conversations deepened my understanding of the challenges faced by different communities and the importance of continued collaboration.
The 2024 Housing Matters event highlighted the importance of bringing people together to learn and grow. The conference emphasized the critical role of housing in building strong, resilient communities in Illinois and beyond. The connections and lessons from the event will influence our future work as we strive to ensure everyone has access to safe, stable, and affordable housing. I am proud to be a part of an organization that seeks to make the lives of everyone greater.
